Constant Lievens Hospital & Research Centre (CLHRC)

The Catholic Bishops' Conference of India or CBCI is the permanent Association of the Catholic Bishops of India. It was established in September 1944, in Chennai. The CBCI Secretariat was located in Bangalore until 1962, when it was shifted to the national capital, New Delhi.

In its plenary assembly held at Jamshedpur in the year 2007 the resolution for having a Society for Medical Education was passed. Thus, the CBCISMENI (CBCI Society for medical Education North India) was formed. CBCI took a decision to start a Medical college and Hospital in Ranchi named after Constant Lievens, the apostle of Chota-Nagpur. Just as St. John's National Academy of Health Science strives, "to provide for the relief of suffering, to promote and preserve the health of the community and to give an example of enlightened training in dedicated service, which is characteristic of Christian educational and social welfare institutions," Constant Lievens Academy of Health Sciences also aims to relieve the suffering and to promote dedicated healthcare personnel in Jharkhand. The CBCI through a Memorandum of Understanding, signed between itself and the North East India Province of the Missionaries of St. Francis De Sales entrusted the management and Administration of the Project to the latter for 25 years. Thus in the year 2014 to materialize the goal the CBCI SME NI under the leadership of His Eminence Cardinal Telephore P Toppo the then Archbishop of Ranchi approached the Medical Mission Sisters (MMS) at Mandar, Ranchi who was owning and managing Holy Family Hospital from 1947. The team representing the CBCI requested the MMS to hand over to the CBCI a relatively dysfunctional hospital. After rounds of discussions and negotiations the MMS handed over 17 acres of land the Hospital and the nursing school to the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India in 2015 through a MoU signed between two parties. In the same year Nov 15th the Medical College Project was officially inaugurated by the then Chief Minister of Jharkhand State Mr. Reghubar Das and in the following year the management and administration of the Hospital was taken over by the CBCI and Fr. George Pekkadenkuzhy msfs was appointed as the first Director of the hospital beside he being the 5th project director of the Medical College Project and Fr. Sijo Kunnel msfs was appointed as the Associate Director for Finance. Bishop AnandJojo, the Bishop of Hazaribag took over from Most Rev. Felix Toppo SJ as the Chairman of the GB in Feb 2020 who held the office as Chairman of GB for 6 years.
CHAI (Catholic Health Association of India) Office for Health Care was established in 1989 by the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India to function as the coordinating body of all the health-related organizations of the Church in India.
